Good morning! I've read some lists of the "I Am" statements of Jesus that only include seven and omit this one. I have no idea why anyone would omit the most important one! This is the one that He declares Himself to God. That's a pretty important statement!
He didn't just declare Himself to be the Son of God, but God Himself. When God showed up in the burning bush to Moses, He said, "I AM that I AM" was His name. It means, "to be" and "the self-existent One." So, when John starts his Gospel with, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God," He is giving perspective about who Jesus is.
Jesus was not only the Son of God, but He was God as much as the Holy Spirit is God. It takes all three Persons of God to make the one Being of God. In creation, the Father spoke, Jesus is the embodied Word and the Holy Spirit is the sound that made the utterance. So, when Jesus made that bold statement that, "before Abraham was, I AM," it infuriated the Pharisees.
This is why they tried to stone Him because they thought He blasphemed God. They didn't see Him as He is or believe who He claimed to be despite all the evidence. He didn't come like they wanted or how they expected. They rejected Him and ignored the Scriptures that pointed to and revealed Him. To them, He was too ordinary to be the Christ.
Has Jesus become too common for you to see Him as God? The culture has watered down Jesus to make Him palatable to society. Their Jesus requires no change, holiness or repentance. That's not the God of the Bible! May you see Jesus for who He truly is and have reverence for Him so that you will live a life that pleases Him in all you do. Make a great day!
