Good morning! Here is another devotional from Sonja. She asked if she could do this one because the verse means a lot to her. Enjoy her wisdom and be blessed by it!
Good morning, Everyone! This verse is one of my favorite verses because, though all of Scripture is relevant in one way or another, this Scripture in particular is extremely relevant to our culture and how materialistic it has gotten over the years, especially when considering American culture.
People are constantly looking at “what can I gain?” and are selfish, greedy, and prideful. Many want fame, many want money or materialistic things such as cars, and many want a specific relationship with a person. Though there is nothing wrong with any of these things, when people have such a strong desire for these things, they become idols over Jesus and in turn people lie, cheat, steal, some even selling their own souls for these things.
In the music industry and in Hollywood, people are put through so much pain to try to get a taste of fame. Satan manipulates people in these industries like puppets. “Do this for me and I’ll give you this…” He gives people a taste of what they want. These people are then inclined to do more until eventually, in many sad cases…they sell their souls in turn for what they wanted.
Many feel great going after these sinful things and living in self-indulgence or fueling of their flesh. But, at some point, these people will see that these things will lead to emptiness. That hole that they wanted to fill with self-indulgence can only be filled with worldly things for a season. You have to keep taking part in sin to get an effect. It’s a drug that enslaves you. Sadly, some people don’t realize this until it is too late to go back.
That is why it is important that we warn people about the dangers of these worldly things. They are only temporary and will not save you before or after death. Only the blood of Jesus will save your soul and fulfill it indefinitely. You may loose out on a lot of these worldly things, but you will find satisfaction beyond measure and find treasure that isn’t temporary. Let’s make sure we remind people before it’s too late. Have a blessed day folks!
