Good morning! The word sanctify means to separate from profane things and dedicate to God. So, set apart your heart from the profane things of this world and give it fully over to God is what the first part means. There's a reason it's first in the passage.
How could you give a defense if you do not have a defense? How can you defend what you believe unless you first believe it? Hope has to be in your heart before you can sincerely defend it with conviction under pressure, trial or scrutiny.
So, set apart the Lord in your heart away from the world so that His hope of eternal life lives in you. Then, be ready to defend the hope of eternal life whenever and to whomever with humility and a fear of the Lord. If we are ashamed of Him in front of men, He will be ashamed of us in front of the Father. That's scary! Defend the Lord, witness for Him, spread the hope and do everything you can to make a great day!
